Is Africa a Participant or Target of International Justice? To coincide with the first Review Conference of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Africa Legal Aid (AFLA) will convene a conference on Africa and the International Criminal Court (ICC) on 28 May 2010. The galaxy of Speakers includes H.E. President Yoweri Musevenni of Uganda, and H.E. Judge Song Hyun Song, President of the ICC. At the close of the Conference, H.E. Adama Dieng of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) will launch a Special edition of the AFLA Quarterly, on the theme of the Conference, with lead article by Prof. Leila Sadat of Washington University, St. Louis, and Chair of the Crimes against Humanity Initiative. As well, AFLA will dedicate a side Program on 29th May to students and the youth, with a viewing of a 90 minute documentary, The Reckoning, a film on the activities and challenges of the ICC. 7-5-2010 On the Shores of Lake Victoria: Africa and the International Criminal Court (ICC) Date: 28 May 2010 The Meeting will build on AFLA’s ongoing South North Dialogue on International Justice and will engage African Legal Fraternities, Civil Societies, Gender Groups and Policy Makers in Dialogue with their Northern counterparts on critical issues on Africa and the ICC, and more generally on Africa and International Justice. The meeting will address issues on the Agenda of the ICC Review Conference including the Definition of the Crime of Aggression, the Interface between Peace and International Justice, Gender Justice, and the big question: Is Africa a Participant or Target of International Justice? The Meeting will carry forward lessons from the AFLA initiated Policy Agenda for International Justice to mainstream African Perspectives in International Justice. Significantly, a conference theme will be dedicated to the War Crimes Division (WCD) of the High Court of Uganda. AFLA naturally has an interest in sharing its expertise and that of its extensive network with this newly established national Court in Africa, with a specific mandate to prosecute war crimes. The timing of the Workshop is opportune as African and International Civil Societies, Legal Fraternities and other stakeholders whom the newly established Court should get to know will be present in Kampala for the ICC Review Conference. |
